A Gnome in a Stump
A Gnome can live in a tree because I say he can. I reference here the Dadaism, “It’s art if the artist says it is”. An anything goes attitude for sure. But such is the freewheeling world of fantasy and fantasy art. In the words of Captain Jean Luc Picard, “Make it So”.
I have long had a passion for Fantasy. JRR Tolkien style to be sure. It did not spring from a childhood passion, unless you could consider Disney’s Sorcerer’s Apprentice (from Fantasia, 1940). Though that animation was always a fascination to me, my intrigue with dragons, dwarfs, and wizards didn’t come till much later. It coincided with my interest in Art while in college. My passion was spawned largely through my interest in the surrealism of Salvador Dali. I liked the idea of constructing unreal objects. But then to give them attributes of realism, to the extent your mind could accept that they actually existed.
Fantasy and The Invisible World Around Us
It is conceivably inconceivable that a gnome could exist. They are tiny creatures, quick, quiet, agile, masters at camouflage and deception. So just because no one has ever seen one, is not proof that they don’t exist. No, before I sound so convincing that you think I am demented in my belief. I will stop here. But remind you that when you walk through a woodland scene there are perhaps a thousand or more lifeforms within your range of vision……. yet you can’t see them! So who can say with any certainty that gnomes don’t exist. And THAT is where the fascination of a fantasy world exists. Just let your imagination roam beyond the too familiar reality that confines your desire to conjure.
