Squirrel on Finish Line – Sculpture Update

Leave a Comment / Sculpture Update / Jward

Squirrel Gets Brilliance My squirrel sculpture is having its finish (wood sealer) applied.  The sealer darkens the wood some turning it to a deeper tone.  In the case of red oak this means a transition from a cream color to a rich amber, or golden color. After application,  the  sealer has to be sanded between […]

Squirrel Fur When I put hair on wildlife sculpture it is more  of an effort to simulate the hair.  Carving actual hair would be impossible. A solid material will never look like hair or fur no matter how it is carved.  Wood is wood, and hair is hair. So the challenge becomes in creating the

The Ubiquitous Squirrel There is no creature that I can think of  that can move though our environment quite like a squirrel.  Most of us at some time perhaps many times try and imagine what it would be like to fly like a bird.  But think for a moment what it would be to be

No doubt you have heard the philosophical question…. Is the glass half full? –  or is it half empty?  Then you probably wouldn’t be too surprised to hear the number of times I have been asked by people, when viewing a carving presented in this fashion,  “So now are you finished with this, or will

Raccoon – Sculpture Update

Finally back home for some studio time.  It’s nice to get cozy with my wood stove again and move indoors for one on one with my carving.  This is a very peaceful time of the year when the last of the road running to art shows has lessened.  This means I  can once again get

Eagle Wood Sculpture Finished

Once a sculpture is finished the final task remains to photograph the work.  This is a process in itself.  And a very exact one. The two dimensional  image never comes close to proper representation of the three dimensional sculpture.  But the pictures are important to the promotion of the work, and instrumental to its sale.

All Carving is now completed on this American Eagle except for pupils of the eyes.  I  prefer to adjust those as dictated by the lighting after the finish has been applied.  The reason I do this is because the light intensity changes value to a great extent after the wood is darkened with even the

Finishing Sculpture with Focus and Pizzazz When finishing a sculpture I dislike describing this final step as putting on the  “finishing touches”.  I don’t like that term to reference to what is being accomplished here.  I feel in trivializes or at least minimizes the importance of this final stage of carving a realistic sculpture.  The “Refining

Eagle Feathers Volumes and individual shapes are the essence of detailing hair and feathers on wildlife.  Both require patience beyond human endurance.   After hours and hours of doing this stuff you want to say “just waterboard me and get it overwith!”  Well maybe not that bad. But I do have to take frequent  breaks

Sculpture Work In Progress More than the normal number of distractions have occurred in the past week to prevent from applying a full time effort to completing this eagle sculpture.  Sill things are progressing, and I now find myself at that ultimate transition point where I move from shaping, forming, and balancing; into detail.  In
