No doubt you have heard the philosophical question…. Is the glass half full? – or is it half empty? Then you probably wouldn’t be too surprised to hear the number of times I have been asked by people, when viewing a carving presented in this fashion, “So now are you finished with this, or will you carve the rest of the raccoon later? OK, so what does that say of the individual who asks the question? And that’s the question I am left with when they walk away. Because it seems to me to be equally mystically philosophical. Why some people like to see the raccoon sitting in the environment, while others would rather see the entire raccoon.
Personal Preference
What ever your preference is in the finished piece, my personal preference is the nested raccoon. For one it just works so natural for a woodland critter to be popping up out of a hollow tree trunk. Secondly it is nice when you get to frame a subject in sculpture. Yes I am talking framing like what a painter would do with a completed work. It all falls into the category of presentation. Even chefs use this form of enhancement to dishes they prepare. It works. It sets the stage. It piques the pallet. It confines the viewer area of vision to intensify the power to focus on the content. The “frame” is the enabler.
