Stumpy 22 – Little Owl Project Update

Owl in a Branch On a Branch

This is the 22nd Owl I have done in my stump critters project for ETSY.   When I started this project it was my objective to have more then a hundred “stump critters” posted for sale at my store there.  I was looking to have at least 3o of those to be owls.  “Not gonna happen”.  At least not with owls.  I probably could get to 30 if all I did were owls.  But I had no idea how popular this subject was.  At best I have only reached the pinnacle number of six.  But I have many subjects I would like to represent in this fashion, like raccoons, mice, squirrels, rabbits, to name a few.  So many things to do and so little time.  My greatest difficulty on a daily basis, is determining what I will be working on on that day.

The Stump Project

This is a project I devised to produce in an effort scale down subjects I had been making in life-size.  I wanted to replicate many of the subjects but scaled to be bookshelf size items.  That represents about half the project goals.  The other part was to retain the rustic nature of the what wood has to offer.   I have noted over the years I have been doing this that  people are fascinated with the subjects emergence from the wood.  So to carry the influence of this feeling to the sculpture after the fact, I decided to leave remnant parts of the wood in it’s natural state.  This meant to carve the subject from branches or roots or otherwise interesting pieces of wood.  By leaving part of the original piece of wood a person then gets to see “where the critter came from”.
