“Piney Top” is carved from a piece of pine in all its rustic natural trappings of the bark and branches as if the owl took shelter in the broken top of a tree. The exposed wood is sealed in polyurethane while the bark has been left untreated in its natural state. The owl itself falls in the range of size for a life-size screech owl. They may look cute and cuddly but they have a fierce temperament that is needed to survive with their diminutive size as a predator. The color variation in the exposed wood is due to a spore and the staining it imparts in the wood is called “blue spore”, much to be prized by people who craft in wood.
